Can one social media post send someone to jail for 5 years? This shocking case from South Carolina, USA, is making headlines and bringing new debate about social media, politics, and transgender rights.
A 19-year-old transgender girl named Samuel Theodore Cain, also known as Roxie Wolfe on social media. She has been arrested. She is accused of threatening to kill U.S. Congresswoman Nancy Mace on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
What did the post say?
On April 26 2025, Cain allegedly posted:
“I’m going to assassinate Representative Nancy Mace with a gun and I’m being 100% dead a–.”
This post was deleted later, but people had already taken screenshots.
On April 30, Samuel Theodore Cain told federal agents that she wrote and posted the threat herself.
On May 15, 2025, police from South Carolina (SLED) arrested Cain.
She is now charged with threatening a public official, a serious crime in the state.
If found guilty, she can be fined $5,000, go to jail for 5 years, or both.
What did Nancy Mace say?
Nancy Mace, who may run for governor next year, said:
“This is not just an attack on me. It’s an attack on free speech and law.”
“The trans movement is not just about pronouns anymore. Now, they are trying to silence people through threats, violence, and hate.”
Mace mentioned this is not the first death threat she received this year. A few weeks ago, a man from Pennsylvania also threatened her along with former President Donald Trump.
Cain’s threat came just a few days after Nancy Mace had an argument with a transgender student at the University of South Carolina.
The student asked her to say sorry for using the word “tranny,” which is considered rude. Instead of saying sorry, Mace repeated the word three times and shared the video online.
Mace’s team says Cain is the first transgender activist in the country to be arrested for threatening her life.
