Alangu, a Tamil-Malayalam bilingual action thriller, was released in theatres on December 27, 2024. Directed by S.P. Shakthivel, the film features Gunanidhi in the lead role, supported by Kaali Venkat, Chemban Vinod Jose, Appani Sarath, and Sreerekha. The story follows Dharman, a young tribal boy from Tamil Nadu, who embarks on a journey to Kerala to fulfill his mother’s wish, leading to a series of intense confrontations.
Despite the film’s compelling narrative and performances, Alangu faced challenges at the box office. On its opening day, the movie grossed approximately ₹0.07 crore in India. The following days saw modest increases, with Day 2 earning ₹0.10 crore and Day 3 reaching ₹0.15 crore, bringing the total to ₹0.32 crore over the first three days.
The film was produced on an estimated budget of ₹6 crore, with ₹2 crore allocated for production costs and the remaining ₹4 crore spent on the cast and crew. Notably, the film was shot on location, which contributed to the overall expenses.
Critics have offered mixed reviews for Alangu. Thinkal Menon of The Times of India awarded the film 3 out of 5 stars, praising the director’s ability to create an engaging atmosphere despite a familiar storyline. Similarly, Sreejith Mullappilly of Cinema Express commended the performances, particularly that of Sreerekha, who made her Tamil debut in the film.
