Deng Mayar was a talented American college basketball player whose life, though tragically cut short at the age of 22, left a lasting impression on his teammates, coaches, and community. Known for his athleticism, determination, and warm personality, Mayar’s journey from Utah to Division I basketball embodied resilience and hope. At the time of his passing in August 2025, he had just transferred to the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) to continue his academic and athletic career.
Early Life
He born in Magna, Utah, Mayar grew up with a passion for basketball that became evident during his years at Judge Memorial Catholic High School in Salt Lake City. Standing tall and athletic, he quickly drew attention as a promising forward. His upbringing in Utah, surrounded by friends and family, shaped his character humble yet fiercely determined to achieve his dreams.
Career
After high school, Mayar’s basketball journey took him through several junior colleges. He played at Western Texas College, Coffeyville Community College, and Howard College, where he honed his skills and developed into a versatile forward capable of both defending and scoring.
In 2021, he transferred to the University of North Dakota (UND), where he became a part of the Fighting Hawks. Over two seasons, he played in 42 games, averaging around 6 points and 4 rebounds per game. More than just his stats, he was admired for his work ethic and ability to inspire those around him.
By 2025, Mayar decided to take the next step in his academic and athletic career. He transferred to the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) as a graduate student-athlete. His new teammates and coaches were excited to welcome him, and expectations were high for his contributions in the upcoming season with the Mavericks. Sadly, he never got the chance to take the court for Omaha.
Death
On August 16, 2025, tragedy struck when Mayar drowned at Blackridge Reservoir in Herriman, Utah. He had been swimming with a friend when he went underwater and did not resurface. Rescue teams recovered his body later that night. The Herriman Police Department confirmed the incident as an accidental drowning.
His death sent shockwaves across the basketball world. Tributes poured in from both the University of North Dakota and the University of Nebraska Omaha. Coaches described him as a joy to coach, a great teammate, and an even better person.
