Joe Hill, the bestselling author, and son of literary legend Stephen King, has returned with his chilling new novel King Sorrow, which hit shelves this week. Known for terrifying yet thought-provoking works like Heart-Shaped Box, NOS4A2, and The Fireman, Hill once again proves that the family legacy of fear is in safe hands.
A New Reign of Fear
Following the success of The Black Phone 2, based on his original story, Hill’s latest book dives deep into myth and menace. King Sorrow follows a group of friends who enter a deadly pact with a cunning dragon, blending classic Arthurian legend with modern psychological horror. “I took a course on Arthurian myths in college,” Hill said. “Thirty years later, it finally paid off.”
Growing up in Bangor, Maine, surrounded by creativity from parents Stephen and Tabitha King, Hill was destined to tell dark tales. At just 14, he wrote his first novel — a twisted story set in a boarding school run by Satanic lunch ladies. Yet, despite his famous surname, he chose to write under a pen name to earn success on his own terms.
After winning the Bram Stoker Award for his debut novel, Hill faced the darker side of fame — burnout, anxiety, and self-doubt. But therapy, family, and perspective brought him back stronger. Now married to London-based editor Jillian Redford and a father of twins, Hill says King Sorrow is his most personal and ambitious work yet.
“The goal,” Hill said with a grin, “is to make it hard to sleep at night — and wreck your dreams when you finally do.”
