René Karst, the beloved Dutch folk singer, has died at the age of 59. His management confirmed the tragic news through his official Instagram account, stating that he “did not wake up this morning and passed away peacefully.” The announcement left the Dutch music world in shock, as his death was completely unexpected. Fans, colleagues, and media outlets described the loss as heartbreaking and “far too young,” reflecting the deep impact he had on the country’s music culture.
His family wrote on Instagram, “It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of René Karst. René did not wake up this morning and passed away peacefully. We are inconsolable. With his music, warmth and unique personality he has touched the hearts of many, but especially ours.”
Throughout his career, René Karst became one of the most recognizable voices in Dutch folk and party music. He gained nationwide popularity with hits like “Atje Voor De Sfeer” and “Liever Te Dik In De Kist,” songs that grew into iconic party anthems across the Netherlands. Beyond singing, Karst was also an accomplished songwriter, creating music for well-known artists such as Monique Smit, Frans Duijts, and Wolter Kroes.
In 2022, he expanded his career into broadcasting when he began hosting his weekend radio program “Karstival” on Radio Drenthe, where he entertained listeners with his humor, warmth, and passion for music. Colleagues expressed deep sorrow at his passing, with singer Wolter Kroes calling it a “hammer blow” and remembering Karst as a close friend who always carried his guitar and a notebook filled with lyrics.
René Karst is survived by his family, though their names were not publicly disclosed in the official statement. His record label, Dino Music, expressed heartfelt condolences to his loved ones, friends, and the many artists who had the privilege of working with him throughout his long and successful career.
