Former Dunedin mayor and city councillor Jules Vincent Radich has died at the age of 71. Radich was taken to Dunedin Hospital after suffering a heart attack and passed away peacefully on 4 January 2026, surrounded by family, the Dunedin City Council confirmed. His family has requested privacy at this time.
Radich was a prominent figure in local government. He was first elected to the Dunedin City Council in 2019 and served as a councillor until 2022, when he won the mayoralty, becoming the city’s 59th mayor. He held the mayoral office from October 2022 to October 2025, during which he was known for his vigorous advocacy on issues such as the construction of the new Dunedin Hospital and other civic projects. After losing his bid for a second term in late 2025, Radich was again elected as a city councillor for the 2025–2028 term. Throughout his career, he was actively involved in community organisations and local initiatives.
Radich is survived by his family, who have asked for privacy as they grieve his sudden passing. Flags in Dunedin have been ordered to fly at half-mast in tribute to his service and dedication to the city. Colleagues and community leaders have expressed deep sadness, highlighting his commitment to local governance and his enduring impact on the Dunedin community.
