Lee was born on 27 August 1945 in Arthingworth, Northamptonshire, England, and went on to become one of the most effective seam bowlers in English domestic cricket during the 1970s.
Lee began his professional career with Northamptonshire, breaking into the first team in the late 1960s before moving to Lancashire in 1972.
Over his first-class career, he played 202 matches and took 599 wickets, including a career-best season in 1975, when he claimed 112 wickets, the most by any England-qualified bowler that year.
That performance earned him selection as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1976, a recognition of his skill and persistence on the county circuit.
Lee was known for his ability to move the ball off the seam and for his work-horse consistency, helping Lancashire compete throughout the decade. He played in multiple domestic finals and finished with nearly 500 wickets for Lancashire alone at a strong average.
After his county career wound down in the early 1980s, Lee continued to play briefly in the Minor Counties and in league cricket before retiring. In 2024, he was honored with induction into the Lancashire Cricket Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy among the county’s greats.
He is survived by his family and friends, to whom Lancashire Cricket and Northamptonshire County Cricket Club have extended their deepest condolences.
