A tragic mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, left eight children dead and several others injured, sending shockwaves across the United States. Authorities have identified the suspect as 31-year-old Shamar Elkins, who was later killed following a police chase.
According to officials, Elkins allegedly opened fire at multiple locations before fleeing the scene. He is said to have carjacked a vehicle, triggering a police pursuit that extended into Bossier Parish. The chase ended when law enforcement shot and killed him. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether his death was due to police gunfire or a self-inflicted wound.
Investigators are currently examining the motive behind the attack, including possible personal connections between the suspect and victims.
What Was the Suspect’s Last Facebook Post?
Reports indicate that Elkins’ social media activity has become a key part of the investigation. In one of his final posts, he shared a photo of himself spending time with his eldest daughter at a restaurant.
He captioned the image in a casual tone, describing it as a one-on-one outing. Just days earlier, he had also posted a photo with his seven children after attending an Easter church service.
These posts have drawn attention due to the stark contrast between his online presence and the violent events that followed.
Did the Suspect Face Mental Health Issues?
Unconfirmed reports suggest Elkins may have been dealing with emotional or psychological struggles. In an April 9 Facebook post written as a prayer, he spoke about battling negativity, depression, anger, anxiety, and panic.
He wrote about asking God for strength to control his thoughts and emotions.
However, authorities have not officially confirmed whether mental health issues played a role in the incident. Investigations are ongoing.
Who Were the Victims?
Police confirmed that eight children, aged between 18 months and 14 years, were killed in the shooting. At least 10 people were shot at a residence in the 300 block of West 79th Street.
Two adult women survived the attack, though one sustained life-threatening injuries after being shot in the head.
According to police spokesperson Christopher Bordelon, the suspect likely had personal ties to some of the victims, and several of the children were believed to be his own.
Did the Suspect Face Marriage Troubles?
Social media posts also hint at possible relationship issues. In one post, Elkins questioned whether fathers would choose a different partner while keeping the same children if given the chance.
In another message, he wrote: “Understand to be misunderstood.”
While these statements have fueled speculation, officials have not confirmed any direct link between personal relationships and the motive behind the attack.
Did the Suspect Have a Criminal History?
Records show that Elkins had a prior arrest in 2019 related to a weapons incident. According to a police report, he allegedly fired multiple shots near a school while children were present.
Officers recovered shell casings and a firearm at the scene, and he was taken into custody at the time.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shooting, including the suspect’s background, relationships, and mental state.
This incident is being treated as a domestic-related mass shooting, one of the most disturbing cases in recent years due to the number of child victims and the suspected family connections involved.
