Daniel Owen Conahan Jr., the Florida death-row inmate known as the “Hog Trail Killer,” died on September 10, 2026, at the age of 72 after being executed by lethal injection at Florida State Prison near Starke, Florida.
He was pronounced dead at 6:12 p.m. after receiving a three-drug lethal injection. Conahan had been sentenced to death for the 1996 kidnapping and murder of Richard Allen Montgomery in Charlotte County, Florida.
Conahan had maintained his innocence and had sought additional DNA testing in his final legal challenges. The Florida Supreme Court rejected his final appeals before the execution.
Before his arrest, Daniel Conahan worked as a licensed practical nurse. He later became known nationally because of his connection to the investigation into the killings that became known as the “Hog Trail Murders” in southwest Florida.
Conahan was arrested in July 1996. In August 1999, after waiving his right to a jury trial, he was convicted by a judge of first-degree murder and kidnapping in connection with Richard Montgomery’s death and was sentenced to death.
Authorities also identified Conahan as a person of interest in several other deaths discovered in the area, but he was never charged with those additional killings. Therefore, those cases should not be described as convictions against him.
