Eliana Moreno, a longtime aerial journalist and photographer associated with NBC Los Angeles and Telemundo 52, has died following the crash of NewsChopper 4 in Chatsworth, Los Angeles, on September 15, 2026.
The helicopter crashed at around 7 p.m. near North Mason Avenue while the news crew was providing aerial coverage of a separate fatal Metro bus and SUV collision nearby. The crash caused a fire that damaged several vehicles and storage containers.
The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed that three people died in the helicopter crash, while another person was transported to a hospital. The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the incident, and the cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
NBC Los Angeles later confirmed that Moreno was aboard the helicopter. NBC’s own social-media statement also identified Moreno and pilot George Marciniw as having lost their lives in the crash.
Eliana Moreno was an experienced aerial journalist, photographer and reporter who spent many years covering Southern California from the air.
She graduated from Chapman University with dual degrees in Broadcast Journalism and Political Science. Before joining Angel City Air in September 2010, she worked as a reporter and anchor for several media outlets in Orange County, working in both English and Spanish.
Moreno became known for her work aboard news helicopters, covering breaking news including wildfires, police pursuits, traffic incidents and other major events. In her aerial-news role, she combined reporting, photography and editing while providing viewers with live perspectives from above.
Her work made her a familiar figure to viewers of NBC4 and Telemundo 52 in Southern California.
