Bruce Baird AM, the respected Australian Liberal politician and former NSW minister, has died at the age of 84. He died suddenly on Friday morning, October 2, 2026, according to his daughter, journalist Julia Baird. His family said they were shocked by his unexpected passing.
Bruce Baird entered NSW politics after being elected to the NSW Parliament in 1984 as the Member for Northcott. During his state political career, he held several ministerial positions, including Transport, Roads, Tourism and Environment. He also served as Minister for Sydney’s Olympic Bid, a role in which he played an important part in helping secure the 2000 Olympic Games for Sydney.
After leaving NSW Parliament, Baird moved into federal politics. He was elected to represent the federal seat of Cook in 1998 and remained in the Australian House of Representatives until 2007.
Beyond politics, Baird remained active in public and industry affairs. He chaired the Tourism & Transport Forum and was involved with refugee resettlement policy after leaving Parliament. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2010.
Bruce Baird is survived by his three children, Mike Baird, Julia Baird and Steve Baird, as well as his grandchildren. Mike Baird is a former Premier of New South Wales, while Julia Baird is an Australian journalist and author.
