John Beake, the former general manager of the Denver Broncos, has died at the age of 87. The Denver Broncos announced his death on October 17, 2026, remembering him as a longtime executive who played an important role in the franchise’s history.
Beake helped guide the Broncos to five Super Bowl appearances, including consecutive championship victories in Super Bowl XXXII and Super Bowl XXXIII. However, the team did not disclose the cause of his death.
John Beake built a distinguished career in American football, working as both a coach and an executive for several decades. Before joining the Denver Broncos, he worked with the Kansas City Chiefs from 1968 to 1974 and the New Orleans Saints from 1976 to 1977 as an offensive assistant coach.
During his time with the Chiefs, Beake was part of the organization that won Super Bowl IV following the 1969 season.
He joined the Denver Broncos in 1979 as director of pro personnel. He subsequently held several important positions, including director of player personnel and assistant general manager, before becoming the team’s general manager in 1985.
One of his notable contributions came in 1983, when he helped with the Broncos’ acquisition of quarterback John Elway from the Baltimore Colts. Elway later became one of the most celebrated players in franchise history.
During Beake’s tenure as general manager, the Broncos reached five Super Bowls and won consecutive championships following the 1997 and 1998 seasons. These victories came in Super Bowl XXXII and Super Bowl XXXIII.
After his time as general manager, Beake served as the Broncos’ vice president of administration before joining the NFL’s league office. He later worked in NFL Europe, overseeing football operations and contributing to the league’s football development initiatives.
Following his retirement from full-time football administration, Beake remained connected to the Broncos through his work on the team’s Ring of Fame committee.
His career spanned more than three decades in the NFL, leaving a lasting mark on the organizations he served.
John Beake is survived by his wife, Marcia, and his sons, Chip and Chris. The Denver Broncos acknowledged his family in their statement announcing his death and extended their condolences to them and the wider Beake family.
