Indian actor and former BJP leader Joy Banerjee, who ruled the silver screen in the 1980s and later ventured into politics, passed away on Monday at a private hospital in Kolkata. He was 62. His death news confirmed by his family. He is survived by his wife Ananya Banerjee.
According to hospital sources, Banerjee was admitted on August 15 after developing severe respiratory complications. Diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), his condition worsened, and he was placed on ventilator support on August 17. Despite doctors’ efforts, he succumbed to respiratory failure around 11:35 a.m.
Banerjee made his cinematic debut in the early 1980s and quickly rose to fame with iconic films like Chopper, Hirak Jayanti, Nagmoti, and Milan Tithi. His romantic screen presence and versatility earned him a permanent place in Bengali cinema’s golden era.
In the 2010s, Banerjee entered politics, joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He contested the Birbhum Lok Sabha seat in 2014 and Uluberia in 2019, though unsuccessfully. In 2021, he announced his withdrawal from active politics but continued to voice his opinions on social issues.
Tributes have poured in from across the film and political fraternity. Actress Satabdi Roy, his co-star in several hits, expressed shock: “It feels like losing a family member.” BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar also paid homage, calling him a “bridge between culture and politics.”
