She was a 31 year old registered nurse from Atlanta, Georgia.
In February 2025, she went to the hospital at the Northside Hospital complaining of a severe headache.
Doctors gave her some medication and sent her home. The next day, she woke up gasping for breath. She was rushed back to the hospital, where doctors found blood clots in her brain. Within hours, she was declared brain dead by doctors, but she was pregnant. She was 9 weeks pregnant.
Because of this, doctors refused to remove life support, telling the family they were legally required to keep Adriana’s body functioning to sustain the fetus.
Adriana Smith’s mother, April Newkirk, said to the media, “We didn’t have a choice. We want the baby – he’s a part of my daughter. But the decision should have been left to us, not the state.”
On June 13, 2025, Adriana gave birth to a baby boy through an emergency C-section.
The baby was born extremely premature, weighing 1 pound 13 ounces (about 850 grams). Baby boy name is Chance.
Doctors said, “He is expected to be okay. He’s fighting. Just keep praying for him.”
Her mother said, “I am her mother. I shouldn’t be burying my daughter. My daughter should be burying me.”
The hospital refused to comment directly but said they follow:
