Ángel Mahler died: Argentine conductor and composer, Ángel Mahler died on Sunday, May 25, 2025 at the age of 65 due to cancer. He was hospitalised since April 29.
He born on April 24, 1960 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. At the age, he was trained in classical piano and composition. He also worked with Pepe Cibrián Campoy. He was known for Drácula, el musical (1991), El Jorobado de París (1993), Las Mil y Una Noches (1998), Dorian Gray, el retrato (1999), Otelo (2003) and El Fantasma de Canterville.
“Drácula” wasn’t just a play, it was a revolution in Argentine theatre. Within just 10 days of its release, the team had already earned back their full investment of 1 million pesos. Over time, the musical made 70 million dollars in total was a massive success.
The show was huge: it had 52 performers on stage, a live 30-piece orchestra, and 50 different stage changes across two acts. More than 15,000 young people auditioned just for a chance to be a part of it. And behind it all, guiding every step, was Ángel Mahler.
In 2002, he also worked as producer, when the original producer Tito Lectoure passed away then Mahler took full responsibility as the producer. He once said, “No one except Tito believed this show could make money.” Still, he carried on with over 180 people working on it, including costume designers, musicians, and technicians.
But for Mahler, profit was not the goal. He believed that art comes first. His main focus was to create something truly excellent and something that made the audience feel amazed and proud of what Argentina could achieve.
He wanted people to see the best version possible, even if it cost more or was harder to pull off. Because to Mahler, theatre wasn’t a business. it was a mission.
