Ann B. Walker, a groundbreaking journalist, radio host, and one of the most influential figures in Ohio’s media history, passed away on October 5, 2025, at the age of 101, according to Anchor Kerry Charles.
Anchor Kerry Charles said, “It’s a great loss. I’m privileged to work at the station where she opened the doors for so many women and minorities to walk through. And I’m just grateful to her family for sharing her with us. She was a big supporter of mine and I appreciate every conversation and every bit of wisdom she brought into me.”
Born on November 1, 1923, in Columbus, Walker’s remarkable journey began during an era when both racial and gender barriers defined the media landscape. Through determination and excellence, she went on to become the first woman broadcaster to cover the Ohio legislature for NBC4 and later the first woman to hold a broadcast management position at the same station.
Her pioneering work opened doors for generations of women and African American journalists who followed in her footsteps. In recognition of her dedication and service, Walker was appointed to a national post during President Jimmy Carter’s administration, making her the first Black woman from Franklin County to receive a presidential appointment.
Over the decades, Ann B. Walker contributed as a newspaper columnist, editor, and community mentor. She remained an active advocate for representation and equality in journalism, inspiring young reporters and community leaders throughout her life.
