Matt Tolfrey, a British DJ, producer, and founder of Leftroom Records, who has passed away at the age of 44.
The news of his death was shared by artist Damian Lazarus on Instagram and wrote, “This weekend we lost a key member of the extended Crosstown Rebels family. Matt Tolfrey played a major role in our music scene and will be very sorely missed. ”
“We first met in Nottingham when I was booked to play at Stealth and we went on to work and play together for the best part of 20 years,” he added, “Matt was a brilliant dj and was represented by myself and Will in the very early days of the Rebel Agency (now NGE).”
“His cheeky smile and humor will be sorely missed. My heart goes out to everyone that knew and loved Matt but especially to his beautiful daughters Arla and Beau. RIP Matt, you left the room too early 💔”
Matt Tolfrey was born in England and spent part of his childhood in Bahrain, before returning to the UK at the age of 16. Soon after, he became active in the underground electronic music scene, performing DJ sets that blended deep house, techno, and experimental sounds.
In 2005, he founded Leftroom Records, a label that became an important part of the UK’s underground house movement. Over time, he also launched sub-labels such as Leftroom Limited and Leftout, giving a platform to both new and established artists.
Beyond his label work, Tolfrey curated and hosted several popular events and projects, including “Don’t Be Leftout”, which was associated with his label and recognized among underground music fans.
He is survived by his two daughters, Arla and Beau, and his former partner Hayley.
