Veteran broadcaster John Stapleton has passed away at the age of 79. He died peacefully in hospital on Sunday, 21 September 2025, after battling Parkinson’s disease, a condition he revealed publicly in October 2024. His illness was further complicated by pneumonia, which led to his passing.
The news of his death was confirmed by his family. His son Nick and daughter-in-law Lisa were by his side during his final moments.
Stapleton’s career in journalism spanned more than five decades. He began his journey in newspapers before moving into television, where he became a trusted and familiar face. Over the years, he worked on some of Britain’s most iconic programmes, including Nationwide, Newsnight, Watchdog, Panorama, and GMTV’s News Hour. His reporting style and ability to connect with audiences made him one of the most respected journalists in the UK.
On the personal front, Stapleton was married to fellow broadcaster Lynn Faulds Wood, with whom he shared a long partnership both personally and professionally. He is also survived by his son Nick and extended family, who remember him as not only a remarkable journalist but also a devoted husband and father.
His wife Lynn Faulds Wood passed away on 24 April 2020 at the age of 72 in Saint Margarets, United Kingdom.
