Ray Lane, the beloved Detroit sports broadcaster whose voice became a soundtrack for generations of fans, has passed away at the age of 95 on September 27, 2025, at his home.
He is survived by his three children — Greg, Deanne, and Jeff — four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Lane and his wife, Carolyn (Loose) Lane, whom he met in high school, preceded him in death in 2004 after 50 years of marriage.
Ray Lane’s broadcasting career stretched over six decades, making him one of the most enduring and respected figures in Michigan sports media. He covered nearly every major Detroit sports team — the Tigers, Red Wings, Lions, and Pistons — as well as college athletics at Michigan, Michigan State, and the University of Detroit.
He began his career in radio before moving into television, serving as sports director at both WJBK-TV (Channel 2) and later WKBD-TV (Channel 50) in Detroit. Known for his warm personality and versatility, Lane worked alongside legends like Ernie Harwell and was often praised for his professionalism and deep knowledge of the games he covered.
Lane was named Michigan Sportscaster of the Year twice (1969 and 1980), inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1997, and honored with both the Ty Tyson Award for Excellence in Sports Broadcasting and the Ernie Harwell Lifetime Contribution Award by the Detroit Sports Media Association.
