Catherine O’Hara, the Emmy-winning Canadian-American actress and beloved comedy icon, has died at the age of 71. Her passing on January 30, 2026 was confirmed by TMZ, who said she died at her home in Los Angeles following a brief illness; further details about the cause of death have not yet been made public.
O’Hara’s career spanned more than five decades, beginning on stage and television in Canada before becoming an international star. She first gained widespread attention on the sketch comedy series Second City Television (SCTV), where her sharp wit and character work won her critical acclaim.
She went on to memorable film roles, including Kevin’s frazzled mom in Home Alone, the eccentric Delia Deetz in Beetlejuice, and standout performances in Christopher Guest’s mockumentaries such as Best in Show and A Mighty Wind. In television, her portrayal of Moira Rose on Schitt’s Creek earned her Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG awards, cementing her legacy as one of comedy’s most versatile performers.
She is survived by her husband, production designer Bo Welch, whom she married in 1992, and their two sons, Matthew and Luke Welch.
Matthew, born in 1994, and Luke, born in 1997, are both adults who have worked behind the scenes in the entertainment industry, including on Schitt’s Creek where one served as a set dresser and the other in set construction. The family maintained a relatively private life, with both sons choosing to stay out of the public spotlight despite their Hollywood roots.
