Dominiq Ponder, a 23-year-old college quarterback for the Colorado Buffaloes, tragically died early on March 1, 2026, in a single-car accident in Boulder County, Colorado. According to the Colorado State Patrol, Ponder was driving a 2023 Tesla Model 3 on Baseline Road around 3 a.m. when he lost control on a curve, crossed into the opposite lane, struck a guardrail and an electrical pole, and the vehicle rolled down an embankment and caught fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene; investigators said speed is suspected as a factor, though the full investigation is ongoing.
Colorado Football wrote on Instagram on 2 March 2025, “The Colorado Football family mourns the passing of Dominiq Ponder. We honor his life, his spirit, and the light he brought to Boulder. Forever a Buffalo.”

“God please comfort the Ponder family, friends & Loved ones. Dom was one of my favorites! He was Loved, Respected & a Born Leader. Let’s pray for all that knew him & had the opportunity to be in his presence. Lord you’re receiving a good 1. Comfort us Lord Comfort us,” Football Forever said.
Colorado head coach Deion Sanders confirmed that Ponder passed away.
Ponder was born and raised in Opa-Locka, Florida, where he played high school football before beginning his college career at Bethune‑Cookman Wildcats. He later transferred to the University of Colorado in 2024 and spent the past two seasons with the Buffaloes. As a tall (6-foot-5) athlete known for his leadership and positive presence, he appeared in two games during the 2025 season and was preparing for spring practice with the team when the crash occurred.
Teammates, coaches and the broader college football community expressed deep sorrow at his loss. Head coach Deion Sanders called him “loved, respected and a born leader,” while Colorado’s athletic director Fernando Lovo said Ponder “epitomized the values of passion, enthusiasm, leadership, toughness and intelligence.” Fellow players, including quarterback Colton Allen, shared heartfelt tributes, remembering him as a blessing to many both on and off the field.
Ponder is survived by his parents, Wendell L. Ponder II and Catrina Ponder, and other close family members including his younger sibling Monroe. His family was known for strong bonds and a deep appreciation for football, with his father having played a significant role in nurturing his love for the sport from a young age. In mourning his death, many have highlighted the tight-knit support system that shaped him into both an athlete and a beloved son.
