Celebrated British novelist Dame Jilly Cooper, known for her witty, romantic, and scandalous portrayals of English high society, has died at the age of 88.
News of Cooper’s death was announced by her agent Curtis Brown, with her children Felix and Emily that Cooper passed away on October 5, 2025, following a sudden fall. Her family described her death as “unexpected and a complete shock.”
Her children Felix and Emily said: “Mum, was the shining light in all of our lives. Her love for all of her family and friends knew no bounds. Her unexpected death has come as a complete shock. We are so proud of everything she achieved in her life and can’t begin to imagine life without her infectious smile and laughter all around us.”
Born on February 21, 1937, in Essex, England, Jilly Cooper rose to fame with her bestselling “Rutshire Chronicles” series, including Riders, Rivals, Polo, and Mount! — novels that humorously captured love, power, and class among Britain’s elite.
Her breakout success, Riders (1985), became a defining piece of British pop literature, blending steamy romance with biting satire. Cooper’s distinctive storytelling style earned her a loyal readership that spanned generations, selling over 11 million copies in the United Kingdom alone.
In 2023, Disney+ adapted her novel Rivals into a television drama, reintroducing her characters to a new generation of viewers.
