Debbie Beard, wife of football manager Matt Beard, has confirmed his death at the age of 47.
Matt Beard, former Liverpool Women’s manager, died on Saturday evening, September 20, 2025. His death has shocked the football community.
In a statement, Debbie Beard announced her husband’s passing and described him as a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and uncle.
Matt Beard managed several leading women’s football clubs, including Millwall Lionesses, Chelsea Women, Boston Breakers, West Ham Women, and Bristol City Women. He won back-to-back Women’s Super League titles with Liverpool in 2013 and 2014 and later guided them to promotion in 2022 during his second spell. His most recent role was with Burnley Women, which he left in August 2025.
Debbie Beard said: “Matt was the most amazing, caring man who was loved by anyone who had the pleasure to meet him. We ask for time to grieve in peace. We will love you forever, you absolute legend.”
The WSL said on X: “Everyone at WSL Football extends its deepest sympathies to the family, friends and loved ones of Matt Beard following news of his passing. Matt played an instrumental role in the growth of women’s football and will be missed by everyone associated with the game.”
