In a heartfelt statement released by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the agency confirmed the untimely death of Deputy Sheriff Terra McKinnon, badge #6224. She was 45 years old.

Deputy McKinnon — a dedicated public servant since 2006 — lost her courageous battle with breast cancer, a disease that ultimately overcame her while her immune system was weakened.
Over nearly two decades in law enforcement, McKinnon earned a reputation for excellence. Early in her career, she became a street–training instructor, shaping the skills and professionalism of a generation of deputies. In recent years, she served as a community-oriented policing deputy at the agency’s Dundee station — where residents and colleagues alike came to know her for her warmth, dependability, and unwavering commitment to public safety.
“Today, we are heartbroken,” the sheriff’s office statement read. “We already miss her — her ever-present smile, her selfless service, and her commitment to our agency and our citizens.” They urged the community to remember Deputy McKinnon’s family, along with her “brothers and sisters in green,” in their thoughts and prayers.
McKinnon’s nearly 20 years of service represent a legacy of leadership, mentorship, and compassion. Her loss is deeply felt not only within the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, but across the community she served so faithfully.
Rest in peace, Deputy McKinnon. Your badge bore the number 6224 — but your spirit and dedication impacted far more.
