Eric Alexander Ozario, an Indian Konkani music composer and founder of Mandd Sobhann, passed away on Thursday, August 29, at the age of 76. He was undergoing treatment for kidney-related illness at Fr Muller Hospital in Mangaluru.
Ozario, widely regarded as the torchbearer of Konkani heritage, dedicated his life to the promotion of Konkani language, music, and art. He founded Mandd Sobhann, the world’s premier Konkani cultural organization, and played a pivotal role in reviving traditional art forms, including the popular Baila music.
Born on May 18, 1949, in Jeppu, Mangaluru, Ozario spearheaded movements to make Konkani an optional subject in Karnataka schools and established Kalaangann, a cultural center that became a hub for preserving and showcasing Konkani art.
Over the decades, Ozario was honored with numerous awards, including the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award (1993), Konkani Kala Samrat (1994), and multiple lifetime achievement honors. His biography, The Indefatigable Crusader, chronicles his relentless efforts to protect and promote Konkani identity.
