Ernesto Barajas was a Mexican singer, songwriter, and the founder of the regional Mexican band Enigma Norteño. He was known for his powerful voice and bold storytelling, becoming a leading figure in the narcocorrido genre, which narrates tales of drug cartels and their figures.
Early Life
He born on September 16, 1986, in Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico, Barajas grew up in a region deeply influenced by narcoculture. Details about his childhood and family remain limited, but his upbringing in Sinaloa, a state known for its association with drug trafficking, profoundly impacted his music and lyrics.
Career
In 2004, at the age of 18, Barajas founded Enigma Norteño in his hometown. Initially, the band focused on romantic ballads, but by 2010, they shifted towards narcocorridos, a genre that would define their sound and bring them international recognition. Their breakthrough came with songs like “El Ondeado M1” and “Aunque Sea en Silencio (Cuatro Paredes),” which resonated with audiences in both Mexico and the United States.
Barajas was not only the lead vocalist but also the bassist, producer, and director of the band. Under his leadership, Enigma Norteño released several albums, including “El Jardinero” (2004) and “Infiel” (2008). Their music often delved into themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the complexities of life within the drug trade.
In addition to his musical endeavors, Barajas hosted the podcast “Puntos de Vista,” where he interviewed various artists and discussed topics related to the music industry. His candid discussions and insights garnered a significant following, with some episodes amassing millions of views.
Personal Life
Barajas was married to Alexis Sillas, and together they had two children: a son named Ernesto Jr. and a daughter named Alix Emilia. Despite the challenges of his career, including threats and controversies, he remained dedicated to his family.
Death
On August 19, 2025, Ernesto Barajas was tragically shot and killed in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico, at the age of 38. He was ambushed by two assailants on a motorcycle while inside a car repair shop in the Arenales Tapatíos neighborhood. His companion, a woman, also lost her life in the attack. The Jalisco Attorney General’s Office launched an investigation, but as of now, no official cause of death has been confirmed.
Prior to his death, Barajas had been threatened by criminal organizations. In 2023, a narcomanta (a threatening message) signed by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) targeted him, accusing him of being protected by rival cartel figures and warning him to stop performing certain songs. This threat led to the cancellation of a performance at the Feria de Rosarito in Baja California.
