Beloved Finnish actress Eila Roine passed away on 8 December 2025 in Tampere at the age of 94.
Her death was confirmed by her son Janne Auvinen to Helsingin Sanomat.
According to reports, Roine had been in palliative care for a week before her passing.
Eila Roine’s artistic career spanned more than 70 years, making her one of Finland’s most enduring and beloved stage and screen actresses.
She began acting as a teenager and joined Tampereen Työväen Teatteri (TTT) in 1951. She remained associated with the theatre until her official retirement in 1994 — though she continued to perform and return as a guest many times afterward.
On television, she became a household name for her role as “Kaija” in the classic series Heikki ja Kaija (1961–1971), acting alongside her husband.
She also featured in other popular series like Rintamäkeläiset and, for younger generations, gained fame as “Eila-mummi” in the children’s show Pikku Kakkonen — a role she performed from the late 1990s until 2013.
Her stage work ranged widely: from classical repertoires to modern dramas. She played notable roles such as Elina and Alma in theatre adaptations of Täällä Pohjantähden alla, Eliza in My Fair Lady, and many others.
Even after retirement, she returned to the stage; as late as May 2023 — in her 90s — she participated in the release event of her biography, speaking publicly about missing the theatre and the connection with the audience.
Eila Roine was married to the late actor-director Vili Auvinen (1931–1996).
She leaves behind their two sons: Janne Auvinen — who confirmed her death — and Tommi Auvinen.
Her legacy also lives on through her extended family of actors — she was born into an acting family, with siblings and relatives also active in theatre.
