Marian Burros, an American cookbook author and food journalist, passed away on September 20, 2025 from a heart attack at a hospital, at the age of 92 in Bethesda, Maryland. Her death was confirmed by her family, who described her as a loving mother and wife.
Born Marian Jewel Fox on June 12, 1933, in Waterbury, Connecticut, Burros was renowned for her work as a food columnist for The New York Times from 1981 to 2014. She was celebrated for her investigative approach to food journalism and was the author of several cookbooks, including the widely beloved Elegant But Easy. One of her most iconic contributions was her recipe for Plum Torte, which she first published in The New York Times in 1983. The recipe became so popular that it was reprinted annually until 1989 to meet reader demand.
Burros was married twice. Her first marriage ended in divorce, and she later married Donald Burros in 1959. Donald Burros passed away in 1991 at the age of 64 from pancreatic cancer. Together, they had a son. Marian Burros is survived by her daughter from her second marriage.
