Former Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich has died at the age of 59, his family announced on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of a longtime public servant. According to family spokespersons, Brnovich suffered a heart attack at his Phoenix-area home.
Mark Brnovich was a prominent Republican figure in Arizona politics and law. He served as the 26th Attorney General of Arizona from 2015 to 2023, overseeing the state’s top law enforcement office for eight years. In that role, he built a reputation as a dedicated, if sometimes controversial, champion of conservative legal causes and state interests.
Before his tenure as attorney general, Brnovich was a federal prosecutor and director of the Arizona Department of Gaming, where he handled regulatory oversight of the state’s gaming industry. After leaving the attorney general’s office, he ran for the U.S. Senate in 2022, though he lost in the Republican primary. Later, in 2025, he was nominated by former President Donald Trump to serve as U.S. ambassador to Serbia, a nomination that was ultimately withdrawn.
During his time as attorney general, Brnovich handled major legal actions involving consumer protection, election integrity matters, and disputes over state policies, earning both praise and criticism from across the political spectrum.
Brnovich is survived by his wife, Susan Brnovich, who serves as a U.S. District Court Judge, and their two daughters. His family’s statement described him as a beloved husband, father, son and brother, and thanked supporters for their outpouring of love and condolences during this difficult time.
