Former Buffalo Police Commissioner Rocco J. Diina, a longtime fixture in American policing, passed away on October 4, 2025, at the age of 75. 
Former New York City Police Commissioner Bill Bratton wrote on X, “Like so many of his countless friends and professional colleagues, I was very saddened to learn of the sudden passing of former Buffalo Police Commissioner Rocco Diina. A fixture in American policing for decades, we will miss his wonderful, warm, friendly personality, his hospitality and generosity, and his love for and dedication to American Policing.”

Diina served as Buffalo’s police commissioner from July 21, 1998, to December 31, 2005, and was widely respected for his dedication to public safety and leadership within the department.
