Forrest Lucas, an American businessman, founder of Lucas Oil Products and a legendary figure in motorsports, has died at the age of 83. The news was confirmed on August 23, 2025, by Lucas Oil Speedway officials and the NHRA. “We are deeply saddened by the passing of our founder, Forrest Lucas,” said the company in a statement.
He born in 1942 in Indiana, Lucas rose from being a truck driver to building Lucas Oil into a global brand with over 300 products sold in 50 countries. Beyond business, Lucas became a cornerstone of American motorsports launching the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and sponsoring major NHRA events, including the U.S. Nationals.
He also transformed Wheatland Raceway into Lucas Oil Speedway, known as “The Diamond of Dirt Tracks,” and secured naming rights for Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. In August 2024, Lucas was honored with the NHRA Lifetime Achievement Award.
“Forrest Lucas was more than a businessman; he was a visionary who believed in motorsports from the grassroots up,” said NHRA President Glen Cromwell.
Lucas is survived by his wife, Charlotte, and their seven children. While the cause of death has not been disclosed, Lucas had been in declining health in recent years.
