André Herrero, a legendary figure in French rugby, passed away on October 24, 2025, at the age of 87. His death was announced by his former club, RC Toulon, where he spent 16 years as a player and later served as a coach and president. Herrero was inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame in 2023, alongside England’s Jonny Wilkinson.
His career
Born on January 28, 1938, in Puisserguier, France, Herrero began his rugby career at the RC Corse de Toulon before joining RC Toulon at 17. He later played for RRC Nice from 1971 to 1978. Herrero earned 22 caps for the French national team between 1963 and 1967, contributing to France’s Five Nations Championship victory in 1967.
Known as “Le Grand,” Herrero was celebrated for his resilience and leadership on the field. In the 1971 final, despite suffering broken ribs, he returned to the pitch to finish the match, exemplifying his unwavering commitment. He was a key player in Toulon’s 1970 Challenge Yves du Manoir victory.
