Geoffrey Mason, the celebrated American television sports producer who helped shape modern sports broadcasting, died on January 25, 2026, in Naples, Florida. He was 85. His family confirmed the death to ESPN.
Bill Hofheimer, a senior communications executive at ESPN, the major American sports media network, wrote on X, “Geoff worked on the biggest events in sports during his five-decade career. I was fortunate to get to know him a little during ESPN’s 2014 World Cup in Brazil. A gem of a person and such an innovative production mind.”

Mason’s career in television spanned more than five decades. He began as a production associate at ABC Sports in 1967 after graduating from Duke University and serving in the U.S. Navy. Over the years, he became known for producing some of the most important live sports coverage in history, including eight Olympic Games and numerous global sporting events such as the Super Bowl, World Series, FIFA World Cups, golf and tennis majors, the Tour de France, the Indianapolis 500, horse racing’s Triple Crown, and America’s Cup competitions.
He was particularly remembered for his role as the coordinating producer during the 1972 Munich Olympics hostage crisis, where his team provided continuous coverage of the tragic event watched by hundreds of millions worldwide — a broadcast effort often credited with transforming live television journalism. Mason earned 24 Emmy Awards over his career and was inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2010. He also served on the boards of the V Foundation for Cancer Research and the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, reflecting his contributions beyond sports media.
Mason is survived by his wife, Chris, his son, Geoff Jr., and his brother, David.
