Ian Lees, the long-time bass player for the Australian rock band Moving Pictures, has passed away after suffering a heart attack, according to reports. Moving Pictures’ lead singer, Alex Smith, paid tribute, calling Lees “just quietly the world’s greatest bass player.”
Lees’ musical career spanned decades. He rose to prominence as the bassist for Moving Pictures, whose hit “What About Me” reached number 1 in Australia and charted in the U.S. in the early 1980s. He also contributed to the track “Never” on the original Footloose soundtrack, which later gained pop-culture recognition. Beyond Moving Pictures, Lees was part of other notable acts, including the Kevin Borich Express, the James Blundell Band, and the Mal Eastick Band. At the time of his death, he was the bassist for the Melinda Schneider Band, with whom he had performed for over 25 years and was due to tour again soon.
He is survived by his two daughters, Meny and Erin, as mentioned in tributes from his bandmates and Melinda Schneider, who expressed deep grief at losing not just a bandmate but a dear friend.
His death has prompted an outpouring of love and respect from fellow musicians, highlighting both his musicianship and the warm, generous personality he brought to every project.
