Popular Bollywood and Marathi cinema actor Achyut Potdar passed away on August 18, 2025, at the age of 91. He breathed his last at Jupiter Hospital in Thane due to age-related health complications. His final rites were performed on August 19 in Thane, leaving the film industry and audiences mourning the loss of a humble yet remarkable artist. The news of Achyut Potdar’s passing was officially confirmed by the Marathi television channel Star Pravah. They honored his memory with a heartfelt tribute on their official Instagram account, stating, “His smile, simplicity, and honesty in every role will always be remembered.”
Born on August 22, 1934, in a Marathi Brahmin family in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, Achyut Potdar was known for his brilliance in academics. He completed his post-graduation in Economics in 1961 and worked as a professor in Rewa. Soon after, he joined the Indian Army, serving as a Captain until 1967. Following his retirement from the army, Potdar entered the corporate world and worked with Indian Oil Corporation as an executive, retiring in 1992.
His journey in acting began much later in life. At the age of 44, he stepped into theatre and gradually transitioned into films and television. Over his career, he acted in more than 125 Hindi and Marathi films, nearly 100 television serials, 26 plays, and around 45 commercials.
His filmography was rich and versatile. Movies like Aakrosh, Ardh Satya, Tezaab, Parinda, Rangeela, Vaastav, Parineeta, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Dabangg 2, and Ventilator showcased his immense range as an actor. However, his most iconic role came in 3 Idiots, where he played a professor delivering the now-legendary line: “Arrey, kehna kya chahte ho?” A simple dialogue that unexpectedly turned into a viral pop culture moment, remembered across generations.
On television too, Potdar left a lasting legacy. He featured in celebrated shows like Bharat Ek Khoj, Wagle Ki Duniya, Pradhanmantri, Majha Hoshil Na, and Mrs. Tendulkar. His natural screen presence and simplicity made him a beloved household name.
