Bal Karve, Marathi actor best remembered for his iconic role as Gundyabhau in the popular Doordarshan series Chimanrao Gundyabhau, passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 95. The actor breathed his last at his residence in Vile Parle, Mumbai, around 10:15 AM, family sources confirmed.
Karve had recently celebrated his 95th birthday. He was not keeping well for some time but remained surrounded by family during his final moments. Known for his simplicity and humility, Karve’s demise marks the end of an era in Marathi television and theatre.
For decades, Bal Karve entertained audiences with his unmatched comic timing and natural performances. His character Gundyabhau became a cultural phenomenon, making the Chimanrao Gundyabhau series one of the most loved shows of its time. Apart from acting, Karve served as a civil engineer at the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, balancing a professional career with his artistic passion.
Condolences have been pouring in from across the industry and political circles. MP Supriya Sule paid tribute, calling him “a true gem of Marathi culture,” while BJP leader Ashish Shelar remembered him as “a humble soul and an unforgettable actor.”
