James Dobson, an American evangelical Christian leader, author and founder of Focus on the Family, passed away on August 21, 2025, at the age of 89 in his home in Colorado Springs. His death was confirmed by the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute, the organization he established following his departure from Focus on the Family in 2010.
He born in 1936 in Shreveport, Louisiana, Dr. Dobson was a child psychologist who earned his doctorate from the University of Southern California. In 1977, he founded Focus on the Family, a ministry aimed at promoting traditional family values. Under his leadership, the organization grew into a significant force in American evangelicalism, with its daily radio program reaching millions of listeners worldwide.
Dr. Dobson was a vocal advocate for conservative social positions, including opposition to abortion and LGBTQ+ rights. He advised five U.S. presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Donald Trump and played a pivotal role in mobilizing evangelical support during elections. His influence extended into various cultural issues, including anti-pornography efforts, notably interviewing serial killer Ted Bundy before his execution.
After stepping down from Focus on the Family, Dr. Dobson continued his work through the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute and the Family Talk radio program, which was nationally syndicated and carried by over 1,500 radio outlets. He authored over 70 books, including The New Dare to Discipline and When God Doesn’t Make Sense, which became staples in Christian households. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley, their children Danae and Ryan, daughter-in-law Laura, and two grandchildren.
