Jean-Louis Gasset, the respected French football coach and former player, has died at the age of 72. His death was confirmed on December 26, 2025, by Montpellier HSC, the club most closely associated with his life and career. Tributes quickly poured in from across French and African football, with clubs, former players and federations remembering him as a deeply committed professional and a man of integrity.

Born on December 9, 1953, in Montpellier, Gasset was a product of the city’s football culture. He spent much of his playing career as a midfielder with Montpellier, where his father was one of the club’s founders. After retiring, he transitioned into coaching and became one of the most influential figures behind the scenes in French football. Gasset was best known for his long partnership with Laurent Blanc, serving as assistant coach at Bordeaux, Paris Saint-Germain and with the France national team, contributing to major domestic successes.
He later took on head coaching roles at clubs including Montpellier, Saint-Étienne and Bordeaux, earning a reputation for tactical discipline and strong man-management.
Internationally, he also coached the Ivory Coast national team, adding an important chapter to his career in African football.
Jean-Louis Gasset is survived by his family, who have requested privacy during this period of mourning. While he rarely spoke publicly about his personal life, those close to him described him as a devoted family man whose values extended beyond football.
