Early Life
Jiří Krampol was born on July 11, 1938, in Buštěhrad, Czechoslovakia, and raised in the Žižkov district of Prague after his father’s early death. He was brought up by his mother in modest conditions and initially trained as a metal turner before working at a publishing house. Inspired by a crush on actress Milena Dvorská, he applied to the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (DAMU) and graduated in 1962, launching a successful acting career. His early theater work began at Divadlo Na zábradlí, where he starred in acclaimed plays like The Garden Party, and he appeared in his first film, Tři přání, in 1958.
Career
Jiří’s career kicked off in theater, especially at the Semafor Theatre, where he became a popular face in the 1960s. His breakthrough came when he joined Divadlo Na Vinohradech, one of Prague’s top theaters, where he performed for decades.
But his fame skyrocketed when he became the official Czech dubbing voice for Jean-Paul Belmondo and Louis de Funès. His voice became so iconic that many Czechs associated the French stars with Krampol’s voice more than the original.
He also hosted the popular Czech TV show “Nikdo není dokonalý” (Nobody Is Perfect), where he humorously interacted with the public, bringing smiles to millions.
He worked as voice dubbing artist for more than 150+ films. He debuted in the film Tři přání in 1958. He also worked in the TV series Synové a dcery Jakuba skláře. His popular films are Sokolovo (1974), Tam, kde hnízdí čápi (1975), Operation Daybreak (1975), Parta hic (1976), Forbidden Dreams (1986), Chlapci a chlapi (1988), and Andělská tvář (2002). He also appeared in Synové a dcery Jakuba skláře (TV series; 1986), Malý pitaval z velkého města (TV series; 1983–1986) and Thirty Cases of Major Zeman (TV series; 1975). Miloš Zeman (the President of the Czech Republic), awarded him the Medal of Merit, First Class in 2018.
Personal Life
He married with TV announcer and actress Jana Fořtová in 1966. They had a son named Tomáš Fořt. They separated in 1989. Later he married with Hana Suvajdžičová, they had a son named Jiří. His third wife was Marta Krampolová, they had two sons — Martin and Jan.
In 1993 Jiří was married to Hana Krampolová, who sadly struggled with mental health and addiction problems. She passed away in August 2020 due to heart failure. After her death, Jiří admitted he was devastated and felt “totally alone.” He often opened up in interviews about his deep grief, and how her absence affected his health and mind.
