An amateur golfer and golf administrator
Born on September 23 , 1936, in Wichita, Kansas, Judy Bell began playing golf at a young age and soon distinguished herself in amateur competition. At age 15, she reached the semifinals of the U.S. Girls’ Junior, losing to legendary golfer Mickey Wright. She represented the U.S. in the Curtis Cup in 1960 and 1962, and later served as team captain for U.S. Curtis Cup sides.
Her administrative achievements are even more notable: in 1961 she joined the USGA’s U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship Committee, then over the decades served on the Women’s Committee and in other volunteer roles. In 1987 she became the first woman appointed to the USGA Executive Committee, and in 1996 she became the USGA’s first female president. During her presidency and afterwards, she helped establish a major grants program that has since awarded more than $65 million in support of junior golf, players with disabilities and other under-represented groups. She was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2001 under the Lifetime Achievement category.
