Lally Weymouth, longtime journalist and daughter of legendary Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham, has passed away at the age of 82. She died on September 29, 2025, at her home in Manhattan after battling pancreatic cancer, according to her family.
Her friend TV host Mark Simone wrote on Instagram, “A very close friend died today. Lally Weymouth was a beloved international journalist, a major figure in American Society, a great part of NYC and DC. She had more contacts in her phone than anyone on earth, a friend of so many Kings, Presidents and world leaders, the greatest party thrower of all, her 4th of July parties were legendary. An incredible life and a great loss for all of us.”
Born on July 3, 1942, Elizabeth Morris “Lally” Weymouth was an influential figure in American journalism. Though she never held a formal newsroom position at the Post, she contributed significantly as a journalist and interviewer, gaining rare access to world leaders over decades.
Weymouth was known for her exclusive interviews with figures such as Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Pakistan’s Benazir Bhutto, and U.S. presidents including George W. Bush and Barack Obama. She was admired for her incisive questioning style and her ability to navigate the intersections of politics, diplomacy, and media.
Her career reflected both her independence and her family’s legacy. As the daughter of Katharine Graham who famously led the Washington Post through the Pentagon Papers and Watergate and granddaughter of publisher Eugene Meyer, Weymouth carried forward the family tradition of shaping public discourse through journalism.
Beyond her work, she was known for her vibrant social life and role as a bridge between Washington’s political elite and New York’s cultural scene.
Lally Weymouth is survived by her two daughters, Katharine and Pamela, as well as grandchildren. Her death marks the passing of another chapter in the storied Graham family legacy that defined American journalism for much of the 20th century.
