Manuel Escudero, a Spanish economist, professor, and political strategist, passed away on 23 March 2026 at the age of 79. He was widely known for his influence within Spain’s Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) and for shaping economic policy discussions inside the party.
Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, wrote on X “Today, we bid farewell to a colleague and friend, Manuel Escudero.”

Manuel Escudero was born on 29 March 1946 in San Sebastián, Spain. He studied business sciences at the University of Deusto and later completed advanced studies, including a PhD, at the London School of Economics.
His career combined academia, international policy work, and politics:
Worked closely with the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party from the 1980s and helped coordinate its “Programa 2000,” a major political discussion initiative.
- Served as a professor of macroeconomics at IE Business School in Madrid for many years.
- Briefly became a Member of the Spanish Congress of Deputies representing Madrid from 2003 to 2004.
- Played a key advisory role in economic policy within the PSOE and contributed to political strategy and reforms within the party.
- Appointed Ambassador of Spain to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) from 2018 until 2024.
Over the decades, Escudero also worked with international organizations and academic institutions and wrote books and numerous articles on economics and public policy.
