Marie Rouanet, the celebrated French Occitan singer, writer, and cultural advocate, died on 25 January 2026 at the age of 89 in the hospital of Saint-Affrique (Aveyron).
Born on 26 May 1936 in Béziers, France, Rouanet grew up deeply connected to the traditions of the Languedoc region. She trained as a teacher and became involved in the Nouvelle Chanson Occitane (New Occitan Song) movement in the 1970s, alongside artists like Patric and Joan-Pau Verdier, writing and performing songs in the Occitan language that celebrated regional identity. Rouanet also published a rich body of literary work, including novels, essays, and poetry that explored rural life, memory, and cultural heritage.
Her books such as Nous les filles and Luxueuse austérité are among her most acclaimed writings, and she recorded several albums with the Ventadorn label. Beyond her artistic output, she served in cultural and municipal roles tied to heritage preservation and was recognized for her contributions to Occitan cultural life.
