A massive fire engulfed the home of South Carolina Circuit Court Judge Diane Schafer Goodstein on Saturday night, leaving the property completely destroyed and three people hospitalized, including her husband, Arnold Goodstein, a former state legislator.
The South Carolina Supreme Court released the following statement regarding the incident:
“Chief Justice John W. Kittredge is aware of an incident involving Circuit Court Judge Diane Goodstein. At this time, SLED is on the scene and will begin investigating as soon as the fire has been contained. Local law enforcement partners have been alerted and asked to provide extra patrols and security. The Judicial Branch will remain in close communication with SLED.”
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is currently investigating a fire that occurred at the residence of a Circuit Court Judge on Edisto Island. According to the St. Paul’s Fire District, reports came in on Saturday from Edisto Beach Fire regarding a structure fire where individuals were trapped.
The location, being on a barrier island, posed serious challenges for the rescue teams, including limited water access and narrow spaces. Because of the remote setting and the layout of the property, the trapped individuals had to be evacuated from the backyard using kayaks and then transported to Colleton County EMS, where they received medical attention.
Judge Goodstein, 70, has served as a Resident Circuit Court Judge for South Carolina’s First Judicial Circuit since 1998. She is respected for her decades-long legal career, though her name has occasionally surfaced in past controversies — including unproven allegations of favoritism in a 2007 clergy settlement case.
Her husband, Arnold Samuel Goodstein, previously served in both the South Carolina House and Senate as a Democrat and remains a prominent figure in the state’s political and legal circles.
