Meg Barnette is known as the wife of American politician, urban planner, and community organizer Brad Lander. On June 17, 2025, Brad Lander was handcuffed and detained by federal ICE agents in Lower Manhattan.
Agents alleged he obstructed and assaulted officers, but charges were later dropped after several hours of detention.
Brad Lander said, “You don’t have a warrant signed by a judge. I’m not leaving.”
Meg Barnette said, “We repeatedly asked for a warrant and identification. The agents wore masks and gave no agency name.”
New York Governor Kathy Hochul shared, “No one should be arrested for standing up for immigrant rights in New York.”
She lives in Brooklyn with her family and has two children. Her husband has served as the 45th New York City Comptroller since 2022. He supports the Democratic Party and is a progressive member of the party.
His full name is Bradford S. Lander, and he was born on July 8, 1969, in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S. He graduated from Parkway North High School in 1987 and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Chicago in 1991. He also served as director of the university-based Pratt Center for Community Development from 2003 to 2009. He worked as an adjunct professor at Brooklyn Law School.
He represented the 39th district in the New York City Council from 2009 until 2021.
