She supported the Democratic Party and served as Minority Leader from 2017 to 2019. On June 14, 2025, Hortman and her spouse were shot at her house, according to FOX9. She also served as Assistant Majority Leader from 2007 to 2010. She had also taught Sunday school in Blaine.
