Miguel Uribe Turbay was a Colombian politician and lawyer who gained recognition as the Mayor of Bogotá, one of Latin America’s largest and most complex cities. He served as a member of the Senate of Colombia from 2022 to 2025. He was grandson of former president Julio César Turbay Ayala.

Miguel Uribe Turbay was born on 28 January 1986 in Bogotá, Colombia, into a family with strong political and social ties. The Turbay family is notable in Colombian politics, and growing up in such an environment influenced Miguel’s passion for public service and governance. He pursued legal studies at a top Colombian university, equipping himself with the knowledge and skills to engage deeply in Colombia’s political landscape. His maternal grandfather was Julio César Turbay Ayala who was served as the 26th President of Colombia from 1978 to 1982. His mother Diana Turbay was a lawyer, journalist, and director of the news program Criptón.

Uribe Turbay started his career as a lawyer but soon transitioned into politics. His rise was marked by a blend of legal expertise and political acumen. He became Mayor of Bogotá, where his administration prioritized improving public transportation, urban infrastructure, and security measures.
Under his leadership, Bogotá saw initiatives aimed at reducing crime rates and enhancing the quality of education, particularly in underserved neighborhoods. His approach combined practical governance with an emphasis on social inclusion and sustainability.
Despite facing the typical hurdles of managing a megacity, Uribe Turbay worked to bridge the gaps between Bogotá’s diverse communities, focusing on policies that sought to balance growth with equity.
In 2012, Miguel Uribe was elected to Bogotá City Council with the Colombian Liberal Party. In 2016, he became secretary of government in Bogotá under Mayor Enrique Peñalosa. In 2018, he ran for mayor as an independent but lost to Claudia López. In 2022, he was elected to the Colombian Senate representing the Democratic Centre party.

He married with María Claudia Tarazona. His parents were Miguel Uribe Londoño (father) and Diana Turbay (mother). His grandfather and grandmother was Julio César Turbay Ayala (grandfather) Nydia Quintero (grandmother).
Miguel Uribe Turbay – Death
He passed away on 11 August 2025 at the age of 39 in Bogotá, Colombia. On June 7, 2025, Miguel Uribe Turbay was shot from behind while attending a rally at El Golfito Park in the Modelia neighborhood of Bogotá. He was hit three times, including two shots to the head. After the shooting, his bodyguards exchanged fire with the attacker, and the attacker was injured in the foot. People nearby also caught and beat the attacker before the police took him away. Two other people were hurt in the attack. In a video recorded during the attacker’s arrest, he said, “I’m sorry, I did it for the money, for my family.”
