Veteran football star and broadcaster Bob Trumpy has passed away at the age of 80. According to the announcement by the Cincinnati Bengals, Trumpy “passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family.”
He worked as a professional football player and later as a national sports broadcaster
Bob Trumpy’s career is remembered both for his achievements on the football field and his respected presence behind the microphone. Selected in the 12th round (301st overall) of the 1968 draft out of the University of Utah, he quickly made an impact with the Bengals. Over ten seasons from 1968 to 1977, he recorded 298 receptions for 4,600 yards and 35 touchdowns. Notably, Trumpy caught the franchise’s first receiving touchdown on September 15, 1968 — a 58-yard reception, marking a historic moment for Cincinnati. He still holds the Bengals’ tight end records for yards per catch (15.4) and total touchdown receptions for the position. His excellence earned him Pro Bowl selections in both the AFL and the NFL, a rare achievement during his era.
Following his playing career, Trumpy transitioned into broadcasting. He hosted a popular radio show on Cincinnati’s WLW-AM before moving to national television and radio, working with NBC Sports. His broadcasting career spanned major sporting events, including Super Bowls, Olympic Games, and significant golf tournaments. In recognition of his contributions to sports media, he received the prestigious Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award from the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2014.
Bengals president Mike Brown praised Trumpy as “exceptional and rare,” highlighting his unique combination of tight-end athleticism and his successful national broadcasting presence. Trumpy leaves behind a lasting legacy in both professional football and sports media.
He is survived by wife Pat, and together, two sons (Matthew and Jason) and six grandchildren (Josh, Jackson, Conner, Kelli, Lauren, and Morgan).
