Nicholas Haysom, a senior United Nations diplomat and veteran peace negotiator, has reportedly passed away in March 2026 at the age of 72. He was serving as the head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) at the time of his death.
Melissa Fleming, Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications at United Nations, wrote on LinkedIn, “So sad to hear that our colleague Nicholas Haysom has died – a truly remarkable human being.”
“As a young white activist in South Africa, Nicholas had risked detention to oppose the apartheid regime, later working alongside Nelson Mandela.”
She also added, “I had the honor to interview him for Awake At Night last year when he told me how he never stopped working for peace and human rights.”
“His voice and dedication to lasting peace – much needed during these turbulent times – will be truly missed.”
