Police Officer Roger Smith of the WakeMed Campus Police and Public Safety Department in North Carolina tragically lost his life in the line of duty on November 8, 2025. The 59-year-old officer was fatally shot during a struggle inside the emergency department lobby of the WakeMed Garner Healthplex. Authorities reported that the suspect involved in the incident was taken into custody and charged with murder. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation continues to lead the investigation into the fatal shooting.
It’s been a dark few days for the law enforcement and first responder community.
In Florida, Miami-Dade Deputy Cesar “Danny” Jaramillo was fatally shot while investigating a traffic crash — a reminder of the dangers officers face even in routine calls.

Officer Smith served his community with dedication and honor throughout a distinguished law enforcement career spanning over three decades. He joined the WakeMed Department 14 years ago, where he worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of patients, staff, and visitors across the hospital system. Before his tenure at WakeMed, he served for 17 years with the Knightdale Police Department in North Carolina, earning the respect of his colleagues and community members for his professionalism and integrity.
Officer Smith is survived by his brother and two adult daughters, who now mourn the loss of a devoted family man and a courageous public servant. The FBI extended its heartfelt condolences, stating, “Our prayers and sympathies are with Officer Smith’s family, friends, and colleagues he leaves behind.” His passing marks a profound loss for the WakeMed and Knightdale police families and for all who serve in law enforcement across North Carolina.
